Exterior Cladding and Paving:
Preserve the texture and color of the Irish Blue Limestone, it is recommended that the exposed surfaces of cladding and ashlar are cleaned every 5 to 10 years. Paving should be cleaned as needed. Washing down with clean water and scrubbing where necessary using a bristle brush will usually be sufficient to remove atmospheric pollutants that are conducive to decay.
Staining from oil and grease - even caused by leaking engine oil or barbeque grease splashes – will naturally disappear merely by exposure to rain and sun light. To speed up the process a highly diluted solution of ammonia ( 5cl per 10l water) could be applied with a brush. This will restore the original appearance of the paving.
Interior Flooring:
Use only neutral general purpose soap preferably in form of flakes that can be dissolved in warm water. A reasonable amount (say a handful )is sufficient per bucket of warm water. This will leave a protective film of excess soap on the surface to feed the limestone surface.
After a number of treatments with soap, the stone surface will be saturated. At this stage the floor is protected and the natural richness of fossils and subtle colour variations will be at their best.
Counters
For every day maintenance, one can clean the countertop surface with a regular dish washing liquid and every so often rub some vegetable oil into the surface with a soft cloth. |
