“Three Voices in a Cave” is a sandstone and limestone sculpture inspired by the ancient role of caves as sanctuaries and storytelling spaces. Three abstract forms rise like voices, echoing memory, ritual, and human presence across time.

Description

Constructed from York sandstone and set upon a part-polished limestone base, Three Voices in a Cave draws on the ancient relationship between humankind and the subterranean world. Caves – dark, sheltering, resonant – have long served as sanctuaries, places of refuge, ritual, and storytelling. They were our earliest homes, our first places of community, and the cradle of myth.

This sculpture is an imaginative tribute to that primal space – where three abstract forms rise like voices emerging from stone. Their positioning suggests both conversation and invocation, as if sound were taking shape and memory being etched into the air. The work speaks to the artist’s fascination with caves not only as physical shelters, but as liminal zones – places where the earthly and the otherworldly touch.

The choice of materials underscores this tension between permanence and expression. The textured York sandstone carries an earthy, grounded quality, while the polished elements of the limestone base catch the light, suggesting moments of revelation. Three Voices in a Cave becomes a visual echo – a reverberation of human presence, imagination, and the need to speak, to listen, and to belong.
