Burren INStone Academy
At Burren INStone Academy, we believe that education is essential to preserving our built heritage and sustaining the craft of stone conservation and sculpture. Our mission is to pass on the knowledge, techniques, and values that underpin Ireland’s historic stone traditions - from skilled craft to thoughtful conservation.
Our Academy offers a dynamic range of short- and medium-term courses throughout the year, all based in the unique limestone landscape of the Burren. These include:
- Built Heritage Preservation
- Traditional Stonemasonry Skills
- Traditional Stone Carving and Sculpture
We also run a vibrant Summer School programme, and offer professional development courses tailored to heritage professionals, conservation officers, architects, and craftspeople seeking to deepen their practical understanding of historic materials and methods.
A key feature of our approach is the use of live conservation projects as real-world training platforms. Whether working on ecclesiastical ruins, historic urban structures, or vernacular buildings, participants gain hands-on experience that links theory with practice - learning directly from master conservators and expert sculptors.
All courses are available to book online. With small group sizes and one-on-one tuition, students are immersed in a learning environment that builds both skill and passion - to protect the past, shape the present, and secure the future of our stone heritage.
